I've been getting lots of comments on the fire effect in Explorer and the magic effect in I'm His Son (which is actually the same effect), so I've decided to whip up a little video tutorial on how I did it.

WARNING: This is my first video tutorial. Beware the accent! I also rushed it a fair bit due to space and time limitations, but if you have any questions, just let me know!

If you watch it directly from Vimeo, it's a bit bigger as well. Whatever ya want! LOL!

As promised, here is the setup I used for my Curves:

If you have any questions, let me know. I'm happy to answer them as best I can. If you want to see more stuff like this, let me know.. I'll see what I can do.

I almost missed this cause I thought you'd be posting it to drawmelot which I now realise you can't-_-'
Thank you so much for doing this! I'm going to copy try this out. As soon as I figure out how to make a mask layer on Gimp that is-_-
I'm friending you by the way, hope you don't mind:D

Looking through Drawmelot, they don't seem to do tutorials. The "pimp and resource" tag seems to just be "pimp", LOL! I'll probably get this posted over at [livejournal.com profile] fanartivation though. Lots of great resources!

As for GIMP, right click on the layer to bring up the context menu and then select "Add Layer Mask"

I just watched this and it was really informative and useful! It would be really lovely if you considered posting it on Drawmelot too - this entirely falls under what we wanted for 'resources'; it's just not been used much as resource so far (we had one person post a Dragon pattern in the past, but that's it I think). I for one would really really like to see more resources posted on the comm. *__*

Ahaha! Awesome!
Digital coloring always fascinates me and it was cool to see how you achieve your lights and shadows cast by fire or magic.

Thanks! These two pieces broke from my usual of painting shadows over the original colour layer using a half-transparent black. It was odd working in reverse - removing colour to reveal shadow! LOL!

Very cool!

I was lost about three seconds in, but enjoyed it anyway. (I am SOOOOOO not good with digital stuff.)

I always find it fascinating to see how other people drawn and make art.

Thank you for sharing your process! It's fascinating how you added the shadows and the glow of the light like you did here. I'll definitely try it out someday. :D

I love how I've been drawing digitally for more than 10 years now, and STILL learn some new stuff every now and then :D

This is a really neat tutorial! Thanks a lot for sharing.

and...may I ask what program you used to record this? :3

This is wonderful!! I'm enthralled to see how you work because it's so totally different than what I do. God - I love Photoshop! There's always so much to learn and get excited about! I almost never touch those Curves thingys and completely forget about using layer masks. But more than anything I love your lines. I would love for you to just do a how-to on your line art. It's gorgeous!

Thanks again for this! I must go practice layer masks! :D

Thank you very much! I'll see what I can do about a line art tutorial.
