Merlin's Future
Sep. 24th, 2010 06:56 pmI was asked today, in the comments of "Uther Gave The Signal", what I thought would happen to Merlin once his secret got out. The reply I gave was so long and epic and rant-y, I thought I should turn it into a journal entry... it's good shit! I swear! (If you love character peril as much as I do anyways LOL!)
So thanks for the great comment and question,

"As far as the show is concerned, we all know that they cannot kill Merlin off. Although even as I JUST typed that I couldn't help but think of the times they killed off Daniel Jackson in SG:1...
and then I got to thinking that if they ever wanted to raise Merlin's character up to the prophesied "Emrys-style immortal" of legend, then 'killing' him (see: SG:1's 'spiritual ascension') would be a totally viable way to achieve that through story. (Which, BTW, would be totally ironic since Merlin in the SG universe was an ascended ancient!) It would also give the writers the possibility to put the age difference back between Arthur and Merlin as it is in legends, if they so choose.
And from a filmmaker's standpoint, if they snuff him out via the chopping block, I think that would be beautiful, full-circle storytelling, mirroring the events surrounding the man he saw executed back in the first episode.
Dang! Now that I've written that, I kinda want it to happen.... Someone fic that up! I want ascended!Merlin like the fiery burning of a thousand suns!!! You know he could do it too! I mean, come on! "Spiritual Ascension can occur through meditation when one is pure of spirit and (in the search for enlightenment) has a fully opened mind, and has shed one's fears and attachment to the mortal world." You KNOW that'd be SO Merlin!!! Shed his mortal body right out from under the fall of the axe!"
What do ya think?
