Paint Cans and Caerleon Adventures!
Nov. 28th, 2012 08:14 pmHere are some more stories from the UK! In this edition, I go to Caerleon, so if you are currently suffering from Merlin "feels", you may wish to skip.
Wetherspoons showed their class the other day when I order a pitcher and they gave me a paint can.
It turned some heads, lol and it was pretty friggin' funny to be drinking from it.

So one of the things I wanted to do in Wales was to go to Caerleon. I have no car or anything, so I looked up a sight-seeing place and they said, sure £45 and well take you to Caerleon, and Raglan, and the Wye Valley and all that shazaam. I said, hellz yeah! Sign me up!
The day before the tour, they call me up and say not enough people booked, so they have to cancel. I was all, "damn".
But then I thought... maybe I'll just go myself! I looked up the train and sure enough, I can go from Cardiff Central to Newport (and return) for £4. Once in Newport, it's a 4 mile walk, pretty straightforward down "Caerleon Street" and voila!!!!
Some of the cool things I saw:
The Amphitheater:

Which was completely empty! I had the run of the place! so yeah, I had fun times there! Same with at the barracks.

Well of COURSE in a town so tight-knit with Arthurian legend, there's going to be streets named like this!!
And hey! I can start up my modern!AU

So yeah, lots of cool Roman things to look at, and lots of Arthurian things.... I found a great poem too that I'm gonna do a piece of art too as well. There were some very cool statues and carvings too!

Too soon?
I went for lunch at the Olde Bull pub and it was DELISH! Cost about £7. I decided I didn't want to walk back, so I hopped on a bus and that cost me £1.57. So, in the end I saved about £33. Not too shabby. Next time I'm out this way, I'll take the proper tour! LOL!

Date: 2012-11-28 08:50 pm (UTC)Was it eerie to be in the amphitheater? I find ancient open spaces oddly peaceful and unsettling all at the same time.
Modern!AU, awesome. Poem and art, also awesome! Sounds like you had a great time, and saved a bunch to boot!

Date: 2012-11-28 09:51 pm (UTC)I applaud you for taking the initiative to go out and get to where you wanted to go. I've never really been one for packaged tours, I like exploring too much!
The town looks cool but the AMPHITHEATER!! I am a total history nerd, so yeah, that fuels my engines just thinking about it.
I can't wait to see what your trip inspires you to create :D
